There will be over one thousand performers, a wondrous spectacle of music, dance and more, showcasing Chinese and American cultures. The cast are from both China and the U.S.: leading pop music artists, a grand orchestra, choir, and dancers in traditional Chinese attire. Plus, a variety of classical opera and musical pieces by top-rated tenor, soprano, and baritone singers.
With over 30 performing groups from the Midwest, this concert signifies what it means to be unified, not only in enjoyment of the performing arts, but also in cultural sharing. It demonstrates the greatness we can create in cooperation across cultures. You will see American groups perform Chinese pieces and vice versa.
Friendship Lasts Forever is a great example of music education in action, and is a model for international harmony and world peace. This type of cooperation was suggested by the National Association for Music Education as far back as 1956, "We believe that music has a special mission in a world torn with anxiety and doubt, dissension and fear; in a world in danger of being dehumanized and disillusioned by materialism, mechanization and skepticism."
As part of this music festival, District 99 Orchestra students will participate in workshops lead by students from China, during which they will to learn about and play a variety of traditional Chinese instruments. District 99 student musicians will combine forces with other high school orchestras from around the midwest, the Valparaiso University Symphony Orchestra, and musicians from China and perform five selections of music together.
