DGN Winter Guard Takes 2nd Place at Stagg Competition

With a score of 73.73, the DGN Winter Guard capped off their final competition of the regular season with a 2nd place finish at the Midwest Color Guard Circuit Stagg Competition, making for an amazing record of top-two placements all season long! 

The team is ready and excited to make their last push over the next few weeks to keep perfecting their show and put their best foot forward at championships at the end of the month. Best of luck, winter guard, with your preparations for championships, and congrats on an incredible showing this season!

Ms. Bernard's Artwork Tapped For “Suffra-Jetting" Exhibition

Congratulations to DGN Fine Arts faculty member, Ms. Amy Bernard, for having her art work selected for the upcoming Suffra-Jetting Exhibition, sponsored by Woman Made Gallery (WMG).

This exhibition, inspired by Candace Hunter and juried by Malika Jackson, will include 300 works by female-identified artists. Malika Jackson chose 43 pieces by 39 local and international artists, representing both US and global perspectives.

Works in the exhibition are emotional and deeply personal, sharing the female experience that address a myriad of topics, including motherhood, inequality, racism, violence, spirituality, and so much more. Life experiences are translated into art in the form of paintings, drawings, print-making, photography, mixed media works, sculptures, book-art and video works.

Ms. Bernard describes her work: “This tea set is for my grandmothers, created in their memory, and for every other woman who dreamed of a career and life beyond making a nice life for others. The women who had to polish silver, wash their china, and wax their linoleum floors, instead of living the life they desired. Because of women like them, women like me can live their whole truth and manifest the lives we covet, with no regrets. My grandmothers’ sacrifices help me understand how important it is to live my life fully and authentically, with a purpose.”

"The Music Man" is coming to DGN!

The DGN Fine Arts Department will present "The Music Man" on Thursday, March 12 and Friday, March 13 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, March 14 at 5 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children and free for District 99 students with ID.


Based on a story by Meredith Willson and Franklin Lacey and book, music and lyrics by Meredith WIllson, "The Music Man" follows Harold Hill, a traveling con man. He arrives in River City and convinces the locals to start a band by purchasing the uniforms and instruments from him. His intention is to flee as soon as he receives the money. Librarian Marian Paroo suspects Harold is a fraud, but holds her tongue since her moody brother, Winthrop, is excited about the band. As Harold begins to develop feelings for Marian, he faces a difficult decision about skipping town.

Historic Performance for DGN Winter Guard - WGI Regional

For the first time in the team's history, the DGN Winter Guard competed in a Winter Guard International (WGI) regional on Saturday, February 29.  With judges flying in from as far as The Netherlands and competing against teams from around the country, taking the floor at this contest was a large step for the team in and of itself.  

The team performed their prelims run on Saturday and walked away feeling very happy with their performance.  Their hard work paid off as the team then advanced into the finals competition the following day. Despite a 5:15am call time on Sunday, the team pushed through and exhibited tremendous energy and confidence in their finals run on Sunday, March 1.  

The team's final round score of 75.22 gave DGN a 2nd place finish, in their class, at their very first WGI competition. Their score was an impressive 14 point gain over their competition the previous weekend and was just a half-point shy of a first place ranking.

DGN Trombonists Perform in Masterclass

On Saturday, February 29, Windy City Trombones, a division of Quinlan and Fabish Music Company, hosted a special masterclass with Bach Brass artist and Chicago Symphony Orchestra Principal Trombonist, Mr. Jay Friedman. Congratulations to DGN musicians Angelica Kowara (student of Ms. Catie Hickey), and Will Knudsen (student of Mr. Ryan Miller) for being selected as two of the three student performers to work with Mr. Friedman at this masterclass.

National Black History Month Spotlight: Sidney Poitier (1927- )

February is Black History Month, and @DGNFineArts is pleased to spotlight the pioneering work of African American artists.

Sir Sidney Poitier, (1927 - ) is a Bahamian-American actor, film director, author, and diplomat. In 1964 Poitier became the first black actor to win an Academy Award for Best Actor, and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his role in Lilies of the Field. The significance of these achievements was bolstered in 1967, when he starred in three successful films, all of which dealt with issues involving race and race relations: To Sir, with Love; In the Heat of the Night; and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, making him the top box-office star of that year. In 1999, the American Film Institute named Poitier among the Greatest Male Stars of classic Hollywood cinema. Poitier was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1974. From 1997 to 2007, he served as the Bahamian Ambassador to Japan. On August 12, 2009, Poitier was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States' highest civilian honor, by President Barack Obama. In 2016, he was awarded the BAFTA Fellowship for outstanding lifetime achievement in film.

Legendary Drummer - Dennis Mackrel - Masterclass at DGN

The DGN Bands were honored to host world renown jazz drumming great, Mr. Dennis Mackrel, to campus today for a masterclass with members of the Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Lab Band. Joining Mr. Mackrel was the Elmhurst College Jazz Combo, directed by Mr. Mark Colby.

Mackrel (born April 3, 1962, in Omaha, Nebraska) is an American jazz drummer, composer, and arranger. He is also known for his work as a bandleader and music educator. He is most notable for his associations with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and the Count Basie Orchestra.

The son of two jazz enthusiasts, Mackrel started playing drums at age two and began his professional career playing at a community theater at age ten. He attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, studying jazz under Frank Gagliardi, during which time he performed in venues such as the Imperial Palace and the Tropicana. In 1981, Mackrel moved to New York City and became a drummer with a Broadway theatre orchestra. Two years later on the personal recommendation of singer Joe Williams, Mackrel joined the Count Basie Orchestra where he would remain until December 1987. He was the last drummer of that orchestra to be personally hired by Count Basie himself.

After leaving the Basie Orchestra, Mackrel frequently performed as a substitute drummer in the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra. Shortly before Lewis died in February 1990, he announced that he wanted Mackrel to take his place as the regular drummer for the band, which soon changed its name to the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra.
Mackrel later became the drummer for many other big bands and small groups including the Hank Jones Trio, the American Jazz Orchestra, the Carla Bley Big Band, Buck Clayton's Swing Band, the George Shearing Quintet and the Dizzy Gillespie All Star Big Band. In September 2010, he returned to the Count Basie Orchestra after the retirement of trombonist Bill Hughes and served as the orchestra's leader and chief conductor until 2013 and on November 7, 2015, he was named chief conductor of the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw which is based in Amsterdam, Holland.

As a composer and arranger, Mackrel has received a Grant for Composition from the National Endowment for the Arts (1983). He has written pieces for McCoy Tyner (on the Grammy-winning The Turning Point and Journey), the WDR Radio Big Band of Cologne, the Klüvers Big Band of Denmark, the RIAS Big Band of Berlin.[2] the United States Military Academy at West Point's Jazz Knights Big Band, the Columbus Jazz Orchestra and the Temple University Jazz Ensemble.

As an experienced jazz educator who conducts master classes, seminars and workshops throughout Europe, Asia, Canada and the United States, Mackrel has performed with the jazz ensembles of numerous colleges and high schools including the Eastman School of Music, Slippery Rock University, the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, Northern Illinois University, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, the University of Minnesota, Morris, New Trier High School, Sun Prairie High School, Western Illinois University, Southern Utah University, the Royal Conservatory of Music in Aarhus, Denmark, the University of Florida, Miami, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Elmhurst College, Michigan State University and many others. He is currently a professor at Queens College in Flushing, New York.

The members of the DGN Choirs have departed North High and are now en route to a much warmer Los Angeles, CA, where the choirs will tour and perform. Travel mercies to all, and best wishes for a smooth trip!

National Black History Month Spotlight: Amy Sherald (born August 30, 1973)

February is Black History Month, and @DGNFineArts is pleased to spotlight the pioneering work of African American artists.

Amy Sherald (http://www.amysherald.com/) is an American painter based in Baltimore, Maryland. She is best known for her portrait paintings. Her choices of subjects look to enlarge the genre of American art historical realism by telling African-American stories within their own tradition.

She first came to prominence in 2016 when her painting, Miss Everything (Unsuppressed Deliverance), won the National Portrait Gallery's Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition. The competition noted that "Sherald creates innovative, dynamic portraits that, through color and form, confront the psychological effects of stereotypical imagery on African-American subjects". She was the first woman to win the competition. Sherald's first solo exhibition, titled "the heart of the matter..." took place in fall 2019 at the Hauser & Wirth gallery in New York City.

The year after Sherald won the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition, she was chosen by First Lady Michelle Obama to paint her official portrait. On February 12, 2018 the National Portrait Gallery unveiled the portrait, making Sherald the first African-American woman to paint an official First Lady portrait. The double portrait unveiling ceremony was attended by Barack and Michelle Obama. It was noted that Sherald and Kehinde Wiley, the painter of Barack Obama's portrait, were the first African-American artists to make official presidential portraits at the National Portrait Gallery, and also as artists who each early on prioritized African-American portraiture. Holland Cotter noted in a review that they both blend fact and fiction in their portraiture.

Gema Perez, Wins Best of Show in Photography at the High School Art Competition & Exhibition at the University of St. Francis

Congratulations to Gema Perez, who won Best of Show in Photography at the University of St. Francis! Her work was displayed at the University of St. Francis Art Gallery in Joliet, Illinois from January 14th through Jan 30th of 2020. Along with winning best of show, Gema was awarded a 4-year scholarship to the University of St. Francis after a portfolio review with professors in the Photography Department.
