D99 Welcomes Maestro Andrew Altenbach #99Learns

Today the Fine Arts Departments of North and South High School welcomed conductor Andrew Altenbach of the Boston Conservator of Music.  Maestro Altenbach worked with the DGN Choirs as well as the District 99 Orchestras.

Andrew Altenbach continues to garner attention as a musical leader of his generation. In addition to his work at The Boston Conservatory, Altenbach is Artistic Director of the Minnesota Bach Ensemble, a professional chamber orchestra comprised of players from the Minnesota Orchestra. Altenbach recently returned from guest conducting with the Lakes Area Music Festival (Brainerd, MN) for opera and symphonic programs. Upcoming projects include Rossini's L'italiana in Algeri, Iphigenie en Tauride, and The Rake's Progress in Boston, a full season of programs with the Minnesota Bach Ensemble, the Indiana University Symphony Orchestra, and a return engagement with the Lakes Area Music Festival.

Recent opera credits include Opera Birmingham, Opera Africa, Central City Opera, Minnesota Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Music Academy of the West, San Francisco Opera Merola Program, and Indiana University Opera Theatre. Symphonic credits include the Atlanta, Memphis and Milwaukee Symphony Orchestras, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Chautauqua Institution, and Grand Teton Music Festival. He was music director for the St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra and the Bach Chamber Players of St. Paul. This summer he finished a very successful tenure as Artistic Director of Boston Opera Collaborative, leading the organization with new programming and award winning productions.

D99 / D58 String Fest Prep #99Learns #dg58learns

Nearly 150 string playing musicians from District 99 and District 58 gathered today in preparation for the upcoming String Fest.  Students gathered first in small sectional groups led by high school-aged students working on musical and technical details pertinent to the performance repertoire.  After a delicious pizza dinner, the students had a short combined rehearsal, putting together all the high school and middle school students to apply through performance the ideas and techniques learned during the sectional time.

The 2015 String Fest - "A Night At The Oscars" - will take place on Thursday, October 29, 2015 at 7:00 PM in the Clarence Johnson Auditorium of North High School.  The concert will feature string students from the District 99 Orchestra and Herrick and O'Neill Middle Schools performing classic film scores from well-known motion pictures. Admission to the concert is free, and the public is cordially invited to attend this performance.
